Your client is a chemical company, ChemCo. Due to stagnant growth in the chemicals segment, they decided to create a high growth bio-products segment. This segment sells these products to universities and labs primarily for use in drug development.

Revenue for the new segment has been growing at 3-5% per annum for the last few years.  The CEO is unhappy with this and wants to achieve 10% growth in revenue in the next year.  

Last year bio-products segment accounted for $300 million in revenue. Bio-products industry has been growing at 10%, hence the CEO’s target.

You have been hired to help bridge this gap and achieve this target. How would you do it?

Your client is a chemical company looking to grow. You are being asked to develop a strategy to increase their market growth by more than double. In this BCG case interview, examine the market to determine where the field of opportunity lies for your client and how to achieve the growth target.

You can use the Market Study Framework to solve this case, but don’t allow yourself to be boxed in. The best candidates blend frameworks and their business understanding to build a structure specific to the case.

The BCG case study has a qualitative difficulty score of 3 out of 4 and 3 math exhibits. This an advanced case interview you might be given in a final round BCG interview.

BCG Interview Tips

BCG is looking for candidates that are adept at building structure and are able to clearly and concisely communicate that structure.

Focus on creating a structure that is crystal-clear, and be prepared verbalize each part of your process..

In this BCG case study, focus on 2 things:

  • Timing yourself as you run through the case: 2min for structure, 5min for math, 2min for brainstorming, and 2min for a conclusion
  • Concise communication and overall polish
