Case Study Prompt

Your client is the CEO of a biotechnology company, which has recently found a way to double the carbohydrates and proteins in corn using bioengineering methods. We are only targeting the U.S. market, which is where we are considering production as well.

Consumer preference for corn varies by geographic location so this is an important point.

  • R&D costs are sunk.
  • No money has been spent yet on commercializing the product (i.e.,
    manufacturing, selling, etc.).

The only difference between our product and traditional corn is the additional carbohydrates and proteins.

The client has asked you to develop a commercialization strategy. How would you structure your approach to this problem?

Case Study Overview

Your customer is a biotech company who has invested time and money to bring a new product to market. Your job in this ZS Associates interview case study is to research the market, dive deep into the potential customer base and build a successful strategy for selling their product commercially.

The Market Study Framework is ideal to solve this case, but don’t forget to bring your business experience and unique spin to the table. The best candidates have the ability to build a custom framework that best fits the case.

This case has two math exhibits. The qualitative difficulty is 2 out of 4, making this an intermediate level interview you can expect to see in a second round ZS Associates interview.

What is BAH looking for in a candidate? Smooth presentation and interpersonal skills.

The emphasis with the firm is more on personality and communication, so research the firm and sure you focus on clearly communicating your process throughout the case.

In this case, focus on 2 things:

  1. Timing yourself: 2min to build a structure, 2min to present it, 5min for math, 2min for brainstorming, and 2min for a conclusion
  2. Communicating your structure out-loud as you run through the case
