Our client is a privately owned free-to-air TV channel in Greece. Its chairman and sole shareholder called us because his team has not been able to turn the business around since he acquired it, three years ago. Their EBIT margin has been around -30% over the last three years.

A free-to-air channel broadcasts its TV signal to everyone, without restrictions – whoever has an aerial at home can receive it for free. An example of a free-to-air TV channel would be BBC-one. Conversely, Sky-one is a pay-TV channel – you have to pay a subscription to watch it.

The chairman is no longer sure he should keep his stake in the channel. His question for you – is it possible to turn around this business? What steps would he need to take?

Case Overview

The client in this OC&C case study is a Greek TV channel. The chairman of the company has hired you to help turn the company around, and determine next steps (if any).

We recommend using the Profitability Framework to create your structure for approaching the problem. That said, don’t limit yourself to the basic frameworks only; the best case interview candidates blend frameworks and their own business experience in order to create a custom framework.

With a qualitative difficulty score of 3/4, this is a case interview you would most likely see in a second round at OC&C. There are no math diagrams in the case.

Interview Tips: OC&C

OC&C is looking for candidates who have an understanding of business fundamentals in their case interview process.

Use creativity in your structure, but stick with what works in business.

For the best consulting case practice, do 2 things:

  1. Time yourself throughout the case (2min to build structure and 2min to present it; 2min each for a brainstorming question; 2min for final recommendation)
  2. Focus on your communication and polish as you walk through the case
