The best consulting case practice comes from out-loud practice. See if you can solve this BCG-style profitability case.

Case Intro

Your client is a U.S. defense contractor that manufactures the Mohawk Light Fighter Jet for the British Royal Air Force. The company has produced the $20 million fighter jet for the past 12 years.

The British government has decided to put the contract out to bid. To win the program, the client’s purchasing agents have estimated, the company will need to cut its costs by 5 percent.

It has asked BCG to help it reduce costs.

What framework would you use to resolve this case?

Overview

Read the case intro carefully  Understanding the actual problem you are being asked to solve is key to your consulting case practice. The client in the case is a defense contractor that has asked for your help to reduce costs by 5 percent.

The Profitability Framework is a good place to start when creating a framework for the case, but don’t limit your structure to the basic frameworks. Create a custom framework that will help you crush the interview.

The case does have a math diagram for you to interpret. The qualitative difficulty in the case is 4 out of 4, making this an advanced level case interview you would likely see in a BCG final round interview.

BCG Interview Tips

BCG hires candidates that are structure and communication pros.

Emphasize a logical problem-solving process in your structure. Remember that BCG isn’t focused on you getting to the “correct” answer, but on how you got to the answer.

In this consulting case practice, focus on a couple things:

  1. Time yourself throughout the case (2min to build structure and 2min to present it; 2min each for a brainstorming question; 2min for final recommendation)
  2. Focus on your communication and polish as you walk through the case
