Numbers, numbers everywhere. Understand what to solve, how to solve it, and what it means for the client. Happening Wednesday, Aug. 16 (6-9PM ET).
Video Overview“I’m going to change the assumption – can you run that calculation again?” Words that no candidate wants to hear inside of a case interview. It’s now – in a pressure situation – that your math training kicks in. Do you remember to stay structured? Do you round a step too early? Do you forget the business insight? If you’ve done drill-based prep, this is where the scenarios you’ve been practicing come into play.
There are 3 types of math problems you’ll see in a case interview: Verbal Math, Chart Math, and Graph Math. In the intensive, we’ll do a deep dive into each one of these math varieties. Doing generic math drills will help you strengthen the mechanics of your math, but those alone won’t prepare you for the problems embedded inside of case interviews.
Without understanding how to break down and structure your approach to a quantitative problem, you won’t pass the case interview. An ease with calculations is one of the first things interviewers look for, and it separates top candidates from the rest.
No candidate succeeds without being able to size a market in their sleep, break down a chart in under a minute, or gather business insights from a graph. Make sure you’re prepared for every type of math consulting firms will throw at you.
It’s all about the numbers, baby
Why do so many candidates struggle with case math? They focus only on being fast or being accurate. While both of those attributes are important (and we’ll cover them in this intensive), the point of case math is to arrive at a business insight. You’re being asked to do math for a reason – what do the numbers you’ve calculated mean to the client? It’s this ability to drive to an insight that separates top performers from the rest.
After 1 day, you’ll walk away having completed multiple practice problems pertaining to each type of case math. More important, you’ll have the confidence to know where you’re ready, and the insight to know where you need more help. A recording will be available if you can’t join the session live.
Combined, the MC Team has decades of experience helping thousands of candidates navigate interviews at firms including McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, Accenture and more.

Things get a little tougher with the dreaded word problem. Verbal math is called just that because you don't have the luxury of a calculator or time to solve the problem on paper. You've got to talk and solve - simultaneously!
Don't ramble your way through confusing math - know what you are solving for, stay organized, and identify why the answer is important to your client.
Now we're getting to the gnarly math. Charts add an extra layer of complexity because you have to visually understand what is happening, and then know which calculations to run. Hint: if you see a chart, there's always a math problem for you to do!
We'll walk through multiple chart examples together - we can't promise you'll never be scared of a chart again, but we can promise you'll know what to do!
There's math, and then there is graph math. We wrap up the intensive by breaking down, well, how to break down a graph. You can expect to have to interpret and run calculations off of at least one graph in your final round interview. Don't go in unprepared!
After this session, you'll have a structured approach to apply to any graph you see.
By way of update, I have decided to accept the offer from McKinsey and will join them in November -- thanks again for your help! I found the services you guys offer so great that I having been spreading word to many many people who recently approached me to ask for case interview tips to sign up to your service!
