Stern School of Business - NYU
Founded in 1900, the Stern School of Business is one of the oldest business schools in the country. New York University established the undergraduate School of Commerce, Accounts, and Finance. The school was created to provide professional business training. It was originally located on the University’s Washington Square campus. Charles Waldo Haskins was the founding dean.
Sixteen years later, the school launched a graduate business program in New York’s downtown business district. It was designed to provide an education for both full-time and part-time students.
In 1972, the school was renamed the College of Business and Public Administration. The Tisch family made a generous donation, enabling the school to open Tisch Hall. The hall was designed by the architect Philip Johnson. Tisch Hall is now home to the undergraduate college.
In 1988, alumnus Leonard N. Stern gifted the school $30 million. In his honor, the school was renamed the Leonard N. Stern School of Business.
Stern School of Business is consistently ranked among the top business schools in the world, especially in the area of finance. US News ranked Stern at #12, Forbes at #20, and Bloomberg at #11. Alumni from Stern have held leading roles at Fortune 500 companies like American Express, Wynn Resorts, the New York Stock Exchange, McKinsey & Company, Chase Manhattan Bank, and CBS.
Program Overview
New York University Stern School of Business offers a traditional 2-year MBA program as well as part-time options in certain industries. The Stern School of Business curriculum consists of lectures, class discussions, group projects, problem sets and guest speakers. The first year is primarily focused on completing the core curriculum. During the second year, students choose from a wide variety of electives to create the curriculum that best aligns with their goals. Stern MBAs may also take up to three courses from other NYU graduate programs.

Program Details
Are you divided into cohorts? Yes
When first year students arrive at Stern, they are divided into six blocks of 60-70 students each. Students complete the core curriculum with their block. From there, students are further divided into smaller study groups of five or six people. These study groups go over material and work on various assignments together.
The year is divided into four semesters, which are 14 weeks each. The total requirement for a Stern MBA is 60 credits. These credits are divided fairly equally between the required core curriculum and elective courses. During the first two weeks, students participate in an orientation called “Launch.” From there, students take the core courses Financial Accounting & Reporting and Statistics & Data Analysis. For the remaining core curriculum, students choose from a list of seven courses that cover fundamental concepts like operations, finance, economics, decision-making, leadership, marketing and strategy.
The second year consists mostly of elective courses with the exception of the Professional Responsibility course. Students have over 200 electives to choose from. In addition to this, they can apply for up to five courses from other graduate programs at NYU.
Between first and second year, Stern strongly encourages students to complete an internship in an industry of their choice. NYU Stern also provides international study opportunities like a semester exchange program and shorter intensive courses. These courses, called “Doing Business In…,” are offered in over ten locations.

Stern School of Business has over 40 clubs for students to choose from. A wide variety of clubs are available from professional to social. Two of the more popular professional clubs are the Management Consulting Association and the Graduate Finance Association. Sports clubs like Stern Hoops meet together to compete against each other and other business schools.
Stern holds regular events, conferences, and competitions. The Stern Women in Business Conference is an annual conference dedicated to advancing gender equality. The Berkley Center for Entrepreneurships facilitates two competitions during the year offering substantial monetary prizes for the winners. What is the NYU Stern School of Business campus like?
The main building for Stern School of Business is the Kaufman Management Center. This facility is located in the center of NYU’s campus in Greenwich Village. The center is home to meeting spaces, lounges, classrooms, and café. While most MBA students choose to live off campus, there is housing available in the Palladium. This residential building houses over 100 Stern MBA students.
The NYU campus is just a subway ride away from New York City. The city is home to a variety of theaters, museums, dance and opera companies, galleries, and music clubs. New York is one of the financial centers of the world. The New York Stock Exchange, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Wall Street, and One World Trade Center are all within city limits.
