Insigniam History

A grounded understanding of Insigniam’s history can give you an edge during the firm’s interview process. Let’s start at the very beginning.

Insigniam was founded by Shideh Sedgh Bina, Nathan Owen Rosenberg, and Michael R. Waldman in 2005. Its creation resulted from a merger of two firms: High Performance Consulting – founded in 1990 by Bina and Waldman – with the Rosenberg Group – founded in 1985 by Rosenberg and another partner. Waldman retired in 2013, leaving Bina and Rosenberg as the founding partners.
The Insigniam name is derived from the Latin phrase Insignia, which means “We shall act to be remarkable.” The “we” alludes to the individuals that are involved in any business endeavor. This captures the essence of what Insigniam is as a consulting firm and sets the stage for its successes.

Insigniam has pioneered the field of organizational transformation; it drives breakthrough performance through innovation in organization design and processes. Its methods result in solutions that drive growth quickly. The firm’s motto is: “We promise your people will think newly, act differently and deliver unprecedented measurable results.®”

Career Path

The firm’s career path does not have an official, straightforward trajectory, which has been frustrating for some employees. A full list of positions includes:

  • Associate
  • Consultant
  • Partner

The company does not follow the traditional “talent pyramid” model where the majority of the team are Associates or Consultants. Insigniam’s team is primarily made up of Consultants and Partners along with a small support staff – a reverse talent pyramid. In addition, relative to other management consultancies, the firm seems to employ more experienced hires.

Exit Opportunities

If you want to continue work in the consulting world or make the leap to a corporate strategy role, these are both viable exit opportunities at Insigniam. The skill set you gain will serve you well in a transition to another boutique firm or McKinsey, Bain, or BCG. The latter will be more difficult, but if you network with the right people, get your application materials in order, and are prepped for the interviews, it can be done.

In addition, a lateral move into private equity or venture capital is also possible because of the valuable exposure to different industries and the skills acquired.

Notable Alumni

To better understand the aforementioned Insigniam exit opportunities, you can also take a look at the people who have worked at Insigniam. Listed below are a few:

  • Ira Katz, VP of Global Strategic Outsourcing at Celgene Corporation
  • Scott Beckett, New Vista Global Leadership

Target Schools

In part, Insigniam target schools consist of the top ranked schools around its main office locations in Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Paris, and Philadelphia. Think Cambridge, Oxford, London Business School, Wharton, or UCLA. However, the firm doesn’t restrict its hiring to folks in school. The firm employs experienced hires as well – you can apply regardless of physical location, background, or education.

Diversity Programs

Insigniam is limited in its diversity programs. However, the value it places on diversity is embedded throughout the organization. The firm is big on gender balance – its ownership and management is predominantly female!

Insigniam Culture

Let’s look at the pros of Insigniam’s culture first. You’ll work with a welcoming staff and meet great people. Employees boast that their coworkers have a real fondness for one another. Further, the work you engage in generates measurable results, creating a feeling of making a genuine difference in the organizations you work with.

Insigniam also has a unique corporate culture that promotes growth. For one, there is access to professional development – room for taking on major roles and projects. And let’s not overlook how the firm heavily invests in training and development in the early years. If you place importance on continuously developing yourself and your skills, this might be your ideal place to work.

Now, there are some downsides that come with any consulting job. Working for Insigniam is not the average 9-5 job. Work hours are long and can fluctuate, and your schedule is vulnerable to getting extended. Additionally, you will be traveling a lot. The aforementioned points are demanding on your energy and intellectual capital, but if you are persistent, you can flourish.

A couple key ratings for Insigniam: 91% Approval of CEO, 90% Positive Business Outlook. Benefits include dental and medical insurance, 401(k), and a formal WFH policy.

Awards

As a testament to the firm’s culture, the firm is Great Place to Work Certified (every year from 2017 to 2023). And, while not quite up there with the consulting superpowers like BCG and McKinsey, Insigniam was ranked #36 in Vault’s “Consulting Top 50.” It also places highly in other Vault rankings: #7 in 2021 “Best Consulting Firms for Level of Challenge” and #6 for “Best Consulting Firms for Firm Culture” in 2020. In addition, Insigniam was named a top 5 consulting firm in 2022 by The Consulting Report.

One more noteworthy mention: Insigniam was one of three recipients of the Healthcare Business Women’s Association’s (HBA) ACE Award in 2018. The HBA noted that “based on a culture of meritocracy, Insigniam has achieved gender parity in leadership.”

Insigniam Interviews

The Insigniam interview process is not for the faint of heart. The length of the entire process is typically around 2 months and is very thorough. Applications are usually completed online (make sure to update your resume), then followed by interviews at one of the firm’s offices. You will first have to speak to several Partners and Consultants (~5-7). These conversations tend to be more personal.

Then, you will be required to complete writing samples and reports regarding various business-related topics (check out our written case interview prep guide!) and psychometric personality assessments. You will have to provide estimates as to when you’re going to complete these assignments – make sure to set solid deadlines for yourself.

If you reach the final stage, you’ll have a final round of interviews with the founding partners who will make the final call. You’ll be notified within a few weeks if you got the job or not.

The process may seem daunting at first, but remember that the interviews are designed for you to get to know Insigniam’s expectations and culture just as much as it is for the company to get to know you. Get started on prepping for your interviews with our expert team of coaches!
